- National policies and legislation:

- Ratified international treaties:
- 1956/1968: ratification of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.
- 2005: ratification of the 2000 Protocols on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants.
The main ministries in charge of migration affairs in the Netherlands:
- Ministry of Justice and Security: Together with its subordinate authorities it is the main body dealing with migration affairs, including immigration (entry, residence); border management and irregular migration; asylum; return and readmission; international migration policy.
- Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment: is responsible for integration policy, including civic integration and socio-economic participation.
- Ministry of Defence: border control duties at airports and maritime border-crossing points.
