- National legislation in Italy:

- Ratified international treaties:
- 1954/1972: ratification of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.
- 2006: ratification of the 2000 Protocols on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants.
The main ministries in charge of migration affairs:
- Ministry of Interior: is the main body dealing with migration; is in charge of immigration, asylum, integration, border management, irregular migration and voluntary return; leads an inter-ministerial technical working group on migration policy.
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation: international cooperation on migration and development affairs.
