- 1956/1968: ratification of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.

The main ministries in charge of migration affairs in Ireland:
- Department of Justice and Equality: Together with its subordinate authorities it is the main body dealing with migration affairs, including immigration; border management; social integration; the reception of asylum seekers and the asylum procedure; return and readmission.
- Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: visa and consular services; development policy; relations with third countries; diaspora relations.
- Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation: labour migration policy and labour migration permit schemes.
